An Interview with Mitsunori Isa
of Isa Koi Farm
I have been surrounded by koi ever since I was born. To be honest, I like fish but I didn’t like koi. That’s because I always had to help take care koi, so it only gave me a bad image. I liked gold fish and tropical fish, though. But once I got into this koi world, I realized how deep this world is, and I also was very impressed how big koi could grow. And I got involved deeper into it. Then I studied really hard about koi. Now I only think about koi.
I could create something similar to what I have imagined. Or, I could create the basic figure of what I have imagined. Then have them evaluated by customers to make customers impressed. I can’t rely on my own valuation only. I realized that koi is not only a pet anymore but it is also an art. I’m like a painter. It’s like drawing a piece of art on a white canvas. I would create something I have imagined, and I would like to convey it to customers by creating such koi. That is my biggest charm about koi. Honestly, koi shouldn’t be exactly what the textbook shows. I would like to create koi that has some kind of special appeal. I’m mainly producing Showa variety now.
There are so many breeders producing Showa. I would love to produce koi that are a few steps above other breeders’ koi. I would like to produce one rank higher koi in body conformation, quality and Sumi. Moreover, I like Jumbo koi. I would like to produce koi that will become jumbo size.
My father aimed to produce Showa with good Hi color like Kohaku and Sanke have. Hi color on Showa was weak compared to Kohaku and Sanke. And he put so much effort into it and created Showa that have good Hi color. He has done that in his generation, now I’m working on the Sumi color in my generation. There is so much to pursue as long as you are aiming for something.
I have to look at balance as well, but the Sumi quality has been changing over the last 3, 4 years. It has come close to what I’m aiming for. But, I won’t stop. I will be aiming for an even higher grade. I will probably continue to do so until I die.
